ARTIST STUDY

Abstract Study

20200525182257_020.JPG

Abstract art is a form of art using a variety of shapes, lines, and colours to create art without representing a particular object/someone.  This study is of Wassily Kandinsky and specifically his artwork  'Graceful Ascent'.  The geometric shapes and soft colours in the artwork caught my attention at first glance. The way that Kandinsky has assembled geometry and colour to communicate his interest in the growing study of microbiology (Martnick, 1970).

Artist’s name: Wassily Kandinsky

Medium: Oil on canvas

Self -portrait vs Selfie Study

20200525182257_022.JPG

The two artworks are completely different as Van Gogh uses bright colours to represent his feelings while Sherman, on the other hand, uses her facial expression to show her emotions in black and white. In Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, the space in the background is filled with decorations such as a canvas and a painting. However, Untitled Film Still #5 has a great amount of space to the right side.  Sherman is bringing up the question about women’s identity by showing her thoughts through a photograph whilst Van Gogh, ]is more about himself as his portrait has a story behind it about a recent event for himself.

Artist’s name: Vincent Van Gogh

Size: 60 cm x 49 cm

Artist’s name: Cindy Sherman

Surrealist Artist Study

I feel that I gained a great understanding of Salvador Dali through his artwork of ‘Meditative Rose’ and Surrealism as a whole. Thus I was able to interpret, evaluate and analyse the artwork through my insight with support from research.  Although I have carried out artistic studies before, I feel that my understanding of artistic vocabulary has grown from this Surrealism artist study which allowed me to use the language correctly. The meaning of the painting came off as very strong for me and with my insight and research which allowed me to see different views on the painting, made me understand the purpose and adore the artwork even more.
