This mixed-media portrait is a personal and cultural expression to represent and share Bhutanese culture. Bhutan, like many other countries, is facing a rural to urban migration situation. Many are starting to leave to find jobs in the capital (Thimphu), leaving behind the skills for traditional arts and crafts. There are concerns about sustaining the art of traditional Bhutanese weaving, which has been passed on for generations. As a Bhutanese citizen studying outside in another country, I have developed a deeper interest and appreciation of my culture. As it plays an important role for me as an individual and for our society, I was inspired to create this artwork to raise awareness of the beautiful art of weaving and to inspire the younger generation. I developed my knowledge of colour theory whilst creating this piece which allowed me to apply visual effects and colour combinations to express myself.
